Spelling Rules (#3 continued)

Rule 4: Final consonants are not doubled before suffixes beginning with a consonant

Examples:

·         commit> commitment

·         govern> government

·         fulfil> fulfilment

·         grate>grateful

·         success>successful

·         quarrel> quarrelsome

 

Rule 5: Words of more than 1 syllable ending in ‘l’, double the ‘l’, even if the stress does not fall on the last syllable.

Examples:

·         cancel> cancellation

·         travel> travelling

·         jewel> jeweller/ jewellery

Exception:

·         parallel> paralleled

·         appeal> appealing/ appealed
